Weed Wreaths
Think about WEEDS!
I call 'em "wayside Herbs." These are the plants that we see everyday- growing mightily in fields and along roadways- unchecked, unlovely, and unwanted. Now, envision a wonderful way of "recycling" these wayside Herbs. My good friend Lucy Morris taught our "Thyme to Learn" Herb Club how to make these some years ago. Every year Lucy would gather bunches of wayside Herbs and bring them to our September meeting. There we would proceed to make the most lovely wreaths you can imagine- all without forms, wire, or clips. Just with nature's throw-aways.
Here's How:
You will need Clippers, Gloves, Scissors, Newspapers and a table. It's more fun to work outside under a carport- easier clean-up too!
Spread your newspapers on the table.
This first part is the most difficult until you get the hang of it.
Twist the following into circular wreath shapes- tucking ends under and within the circle; tightening as you go. Remember that wreaths will loosen a bit as they dry, so be certain to anchor the ends well and to fill the wreath fuller that you think you should.
Eleagus (Silverberry), Grapevine, Kudzu, or Honeysuckle.
Fill this wreath (form) with Grasses, Lespedesa, and Sage Brush.
Add Color: Ageratum, Baby's Breath, Black-eyed Susan's -a favorite of mine ;) - Cockscomb, Globe Amaranth, Goldenrod, Hydrangea, Lamb's ear, Marigold, Red Sumac, Roses, Salvia, Snowball, Statice, Strawflowers, Sunflowers, Yarrow, and Zinnia.
Add Seed Heads: Cannas, Crepe Myrtle, Corn Tassles, Garlic, Money Plant, Peppers, Poppy, and Wheat.
For Grasses: Ferns, Quaking grass, Rabbit Grass, or Hare's tail, or Oats and Wheat.
Herbs: Artemesias, Heather, Lavender, Oregano, Rose Hips, Lemon Verbena Lemon Balm, Lemongrass, Yarrow, and Fennel.
This makes a wonderful family project. Take Pictures! Weed Wreaths make lovely gifts... If you can part with them!
