Water
Decoction
Decoctions are simmered over a long time. Woody, fibrous, tough and dense plant parts like roots, bark, seeds, fibrous stems and leaves; and nuts should be reduced to smallest pieces to access the greatest surface area before decocting.
1. Place 4-6 Tablespoons of fresh cut or ground HERB into a pan with a tight-fitting lid.
2. Add 1 quart of COLD water. Cold water must be used to bring the mixture to a slow simmer to assure the complete extraction of all the constituents. If possible soak the HERB in the water for a few hours prior to heating.
3. Cover and bring to slow boil; decrease heat to simmer.
4. Simmer for 20 to 30 minutes. The amount of time and HERB used will determine the strength of your decoction.
5. Pour into a jar and set aside overnight.
6. After cooled; Strain and press.
7. Add water to bring volume back to 1 quart.
