Fragrant herbs
Many of us become intrigued by HERBS through the fragrance of Lavender.
Most of the HERBS we know and love impart fragrance. Even though most HERBS are not laden with beautiful blooms, their leaves contain unforgettable fragrance. Think about Rosemary, Anise Hyssop, Lavender, Mint, Basil, Marjoram, Tarragon, Thyme, Artemisia, Santolina, Salvia, Curry, and Lemon Verbena. M-m-m-m-m! Those fragrances are a joy to work with.
Our class on Aromatic and Fragrant HERBS revealed that nothing draws us into the world of HERBS as much as fragrance. The smell of Mint and Rose on our hands. The sumptuous feel of crisp linens scented with Lavender remind us that Potpourris of scented herbs have been with us since medieval times.
HERBS charm us by their fragrance.
HERBS are the same today as in countless ages. Their allure is in their antiquity. Because our world is filled with complexity; we search for simplicity - the age old. Growing HERBS is a sensual experience - more so than any other kind of gardening.
We learned about the FIVE SENSES and THE VALUE OF AROMA - how fragrance through the palate adds immeasurably to taste. We realize that our very history is encapsulated in the nostalgia of scent. We start with a simple fragrant garden containing: Balm of Gilead, Basil, Catnip, Costmary, Lavender, Lemon Verbena, Mint, Patchouli, Pennyroyal, Sage, Southernwood, Thyme, and Scented Geraniums. We mentioned mints (with their square stems) and noted how they are propagated by cuttings; need containment and love; and should be planted near walkways so that their fragrance can accompany visitors. Lemon HERBS (Lemon Balm, Lemon Verbena, Lemon Basil, Lemon Thyme, and Lemongrass) are wildly fragrant, nerve soothing, and helpful in both cooking and medicine making. We love Minarda (Bee Balm) for her "Raggady Ann" heads of color and fragrant leaves. Scented Geraniums (Palargonium) enlighten us with rose, spicy, pungent, lemon, mint, and fruit scented blossoms and leaves. We discussed the allure of scent for the whole garden. Scented HERBS are most valuable when utilized as companion plants to encourage pollination and outwit pests. We have discussed the propagation and harvest of scented HERBS, and know that the more we harvest, the more we stimulate growth.
Fragrant HERBS sustain us; they keep us in the garden.
